刷 B 站看到这个中古动画的切片,心血来潮立了项,可惜立项即后悔,做着做着还变成了实验性项目。
作为 15 年前的片子,画质很难评价。
全片线条偏粗,很有当年动画的风格,原生分辨率总体不高,但肯定是高于 HD 制作。
有些场景线条锐度很好,但是有极重的振铃,圈数极多,亮暗均有;有些场景锐度很一般,振铃也不多;还有些场景线条糊也算了,还又淡又虚。
然后是平面,暗场噪点观感一般,好在没什么色带。至于纹理,以当年的动画制作水平来说还算丰富,锐度也和线条类似高低不均。
除此以外就是画面四周的烂边,圈数实在太多,同样亮暗均有,左右 4-8 px 不等,上下 1-3 px 不等,已经到了影响肉眼观感的程度。
看得出此片并非粗制滥造,奈何技术和场外等多方面因素,弄出了这么个东西来。
如此画质加持下,我们尝试了各种常规处理手段,都不尽如人意。主要问题在于常规手段难以有效改善线条过粗发虚和太多振铃对观感的影响。
基于此我们为本片定制了处理流程,组合了多种现有 AI 滤镜,结合各种限制手段,保证收线加深、防止过度锐化,并消除外圈振铃。
我们还采用了新式的烂边修复手段,烂边基本被清理干净,当然仔细看部分场景仍有不明显的处理瑕疵,实在难以调和故此点到为止。
剩下的就是一些常规的处理:抗锯齿、去色带、去振铃,最后抹去了一些烂噪。
OAD 是 DVD 源压制,画质烂的一视同仁,就是神经网络拉升+常规处理,这里不再赘述。
考虑到处理的实验性质,本片往后可能还会重制,本次释出仅是一次抛砖引玉,希望时代的进步可以为我们带来更好的处理手段。
The encode plan of this old anime was purely a whim after watching the scene cut on bilibili, but unfortunately, was struggled immediately due to the image quality. And the project even became experimental afterwards.
As an anime made 15 years ago, it's hard to judge the complex image quality briefly.
The lines are thick throughout the series, very much in the style of back then. The native resolution is generally not high, but definitely higher than HD production.
Some scenes have very good line sharpness, but there is heavy ringing, many layers, with either white or black characteristics. Some scenes have average line sharpness and not much ringing; some scenes have blurry lines which are light and faded.
Then, about the flat areas, the noise in dark areas is not good, but with little colour banding. As for the textures, they are quite rich for animation in those years, and the sharpness is, similar to the lines, various.
Besides, there are dirty edges around the image, many layers, also with either light or dark characteristics, left/right 4-8 px, top/bottom 1-3 px. It has directly influenced the watching experience.
To be frank, this film is not under a rough production, but the technical and post-production factors have resulted in such a thing.
With such an image quality, we tried all kinds of regular processing, but they are not satisfactory. The main problem was that it was difficult to improve the thick lines together with so much ringing on the viewing experience.
For this reason, we customised our processing for this encode, combining several current neural network algorithms with a variety of limitation measures to ensure thinner and deeper lines, also prevent oversharpening, and eliminate the outer layer ringing.
We also used a new type of dirty edge repair method, which worked well. But of course, there are still some obscure processing artifacts in some scenes, which are really hard to limit, so be it.
The rest is the usual stuff: anti-aliasing, de-banding, de-ringing, and finally erasing some dirty-look noise.
The OAD is a DVD production, and the image quality is terrible in all aspects. So we used the neural network upscaling + regular processing, no more useful comments.
Considering the experimental processing, this encode may be revised in the future, and this release is just a throwaway, hoping that time will bring us better processing methods.
